A Mama Makeover with the Thrill of Thrifting and The Sassarita

  • by

I’m not a shopper. I wear clothes forever and tend to stick to the same brands, styles, and colors. When you do find me at the mall, I’m a mom on a mission with a certain item in mind. That’s why I was so excited that I won a Thrift Trip with personal stylists – Kelly Lynch, Thrill of Thrifting owner and Megan DeFruscio, owner of The Sassarita.

The Thrill of Thrifting organizes personalized shopping trips with suggested second-hand shops in the area requested, thrifting shopping tips, and dining recommendations. The Sassarita is a personal shopper and style consultant on a mission to help women feel sassy and confident every day!

Getting Used to My Post-Bump Body

Not so shocking news flash, pregnancy and having a baby changes your body. Your clothes don’t fit the same. You’re wider and bigger in certain areas. And, despite how much society wants to tell you otherwise – the weight may come on in nine months, but it certainly does not come off that fast (and that’s ok).

While my daughter’s closet is cascading with adorable outfits, it was time for this mama to put her own clothing needs first. Before our thrift trip, Kelly asked about my personal style, how far I’d want to drive, budget, ideal outfit, and my mid-shopping meal preference (a girl after my own heart). My personal and professional lives are intertwined as a work-from-home/stay-at-home mom.  I need outfits that can keep up with cruising crawler and also impress potential clients.

Let the Thrifting Begin!

Stop #1: Clothes Mentor West Chester, 1369 Wilmington Pike, West Chester, PA 19382

Kelly and Megan pulled together perfect looks for my new, postpartum lifestyle. Normally, I’d be disheartened by a rack of rejects and ill-fitting clothes, but Megan and Kelly pointed out that just because something doesn’t completely zip up, it still gave them an idea of what neckline, shapes, colors, and patterns complimented me. Between consigning and coupons, I walked away with an amazing NWT blazer, NWT pants, a blouse, and earrings for $17.

Stop #2: Nudy’s Cafe, 240 Painters Crossing, Chadds Ford, PA US 19317

The wall in their down-home cafe told me to “start the day like it was my birthday”, so that is exactly what I did. I ordered cloud-like crepes filled with airy, not-too-sweet whipped ricotta and drizzled with Nutella and fresh berries. Because #treatyoself.

Stop #3: Twinkle Resale Shop, 100 Ridge Rd, Chadds Ford, PA 19317

I thought we were in for a quick stop when we walked in and saw formal gowns and more upscale attire. However, Megan and Kelly searched through the racks, pulling out blouses in and out of my comfort zone. While some of the sizings were off, I loved the bold patterns. Megan discovered an amazing “wild card” print that I would never have tried on otherwise. In the end, I walked away with a Kaspar blouse for $3!

Stop #4: Christine’s Upscale Resale, 105 Westtown Rd, West Chester, PA 19382

Sometimes you walk into a place with one expectation and leave with a completely different one. We came in search of a pair of flats to complete my look but found out it is not easy to thrift for tiny feet. However, the stop was still a step in the right fashion direction. Megan selected a beautiful, spring blouse and a $2.50 form-fitting, black dress caught my eye on the clearance rack.

Receipt, please.

The total haul for the day: 3 blouses, 1 dress, 1 jacket, 1 pair of pants & earrings for $41!

Even though the clothes didn’t fit as they used to and I’m still getting used to my new postpartum body, the ladies never left me feeling discouraged. In fact, I felt like I was shopping the dear friends – laughing, exchanging stories, and tackling big topics like marriage, motherhood, relationships, and the pressure on women – in between bites and fittings.

Not only did the ladies meet my minuscule $40 budget, but they found flattering, comfy, and versatile pieces that work just as well during client meetings as play dates, and from date night to brunch with the gals. I highly recommend them for a fun, customized way to mix up anyone’s wardrobe. I can’t wait for my next mom’s day out with the Thrill of Thrifting and The Sassarita
